Kemp Manufacturing receives credit for constructing the first successful automated manure spreader in 1865. The company would later sell the design to International Harvester (now Case IH). In the late 1800s, Joseph Oppenheim and his New Idea company (now part of AGCO) would advance manure spreaders by constructing the first model to use rotating wooden paddles, which helped spread manure across a wider area behind the spreader.
